Revenue Cycle Management

Revenue Cycle Management

Revenue cycle management (RCM) is the process that manages claims processing, payment and revenue generation. It entails using technology to keep track of the claims process at every point of its life, so the healthcare provider doing the billing can follow the process and address any issues, allowing for a steady stream of revenue.
The process includes keeping track of claims in the system, making sure payments are collected and addressing denied claims, which can cause up to 90 percent of missed revenue opportunity.
RCM encompasses everything from determining patient insurance eligibility and collecting co-pays to properly coding claims using ICD-10. Time management and efficiency play large elements in RCM, and a physician’s or hospital’s choice of an EMR can be largely centered around how their RCM is implemented.

What is Medical Billing

What is Medical Billing?

Medical Billing FormMedical billing translates a health care service into a billing claim. The responsibility of the medical biller in a health care facility is to follow that claim to ensure the practice receives reimbursement for the work the providers perform. A knowledgeable biller can optimize revenue performance for the practice.
Although a medical biller’s duties vary with the size of the work facility, the biller typically assembles all data concerning the bill. This can include charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up and patient follow-up. Medical billers regularly communicate with physicians and other health care professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information. Therefore, the medical biller must understand how to read the medical record and, like the medical coder, be familiar with CPT®, HCPCS Level II and ICD-9-CM codes.
